SKELETAL MUSCLE MASS TO VISCERAL FAT AREA RATIO IS ASSOCIATED WITH CORONARY ARTERY CALCIFICATION IN TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS
Introdução
Sarcopenia and obesity are both associated with increased cardiovascular risk. To provide further evidence to the potential relevance of body composition and atherosclerosis, we have evaluated the association between skeletal muscle mass to visceral fat area ratio with the coronary artery calcium score (CAC) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
Material e Método
This was a cross-sectional study using data from the Brazilian Diabetes Study, an ongoing prospective cohort; inclusion criteria were T2DM diagnosis and age between 40 and 70 years old. CAC was evaluated using X-ray computed tomography. Body composition was estimated using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans.Skeletal muscle mass to visceral fat area ratio (SRV) was calculated by the division of appendicular skeletal muscle by the visceral fat area (VFA). Patients were grouped as high CAC (>100 Agaston) and low CAC (≤100 Agaston) for comparison. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 25.
Resultados
446individuals (58.14 ± 7.4 years, 56.7% men) were considered, of which 40,4% (n=180) had T2DM for more than 10 years.Mean of IMC was 30.41 ± 4.93 kg/m2. Subjects with CAC > 100Agaston (n=131; 29,4%)had lower skeletal muscle mass to visceral fat area ratio (median 11.59 [IQR 6.97] vs median 12.96 [6.97]; p<0.003). In addition, skeletal muscle mass to visceral fat area ratio[OR: 0.963 (95%CI: 0.933-0.993); p<0.017] was associated with higher coronary artery calcification.
Discussão e Conclusões
Skeletal muscle mass to visceral fat area ratiowas associated with CAC score. Therefore, this ratio can be a potential predictor of coronary artery calcification.
