I am a pediatric cardiologist practicing in Heart Failure and Transplantation at the University of Utah Primary Children's Hospital, (Salt Lake City UT USA). My undergraduate training in Biology and medical school were completed in Canada at the University of Calgary. I then complete my pediatric cardiology training and Heart Failure and Transplant subspeciality training at Stanford University. In 2015 I began my work at the University of Utah and initially focused on building the ventricular assist device (VAD program) and cardiac anticoagulation. I remain active in these roles but as we have gained expertise in the medical and surgical care of these patients, I have shifted my focus to that of parent and patient quality of life in VAD support. It is clear that we are able to offer a wide range of advanced therapies for these patients, but this comes with a heavy burden of stress and psychosocial challenges for them and their parents. I am currently building an evidence base to improve our care delivery so that we can address the support needs of patients and parents before, during, and after pediatric VAD support.
